& OUR COMMUNITY OF LOOPSTERS THE LOOP: *** E-Blasts Featured after Introductory Articles ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Baltimore and the Arts ARTSCAPE is upon us, and I am particularly excited about it this year. One reason is that I am singing in this wonderful celebration on Sunday the 18th as a member of the BACH CONCERT SERIES CHOIR. It is easy to get psyched up about that experience, especially since we'll be performing at beautiful Corpus Christi Church in Bolton Hill. My personal participation aside, this event, the largest FREE FESTIVAL CELEBRATION of the ARTS in the entire United States--running from July 16th to 18th-- is just further evidence of what is happening in this city with regard to the arts. THE ARTS SCENE is ON FIRE and THRIVING!!! Be a part of this thrilling trend. Of course, try to get over to this wonderful ARTSCAPE festival, but also go into the galleries in our neighborhoods. Support the concerts throughout our city. Contribute to these groups that are working so hard to bring THE BEST to our region for you to enjoy. And TELL OTHERS about what you are seeing, hearing, experiencing and particpate yourself. what a wonderful trend. One more reason to love this city and to love our neighborhoods and the people who live there. Be one of the special gang. You are already or you wouldn't be living here. But, you already knew that. Have a great season. Jane Wehrle ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Learn more about THE Loop and how to join here: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE Loop Personal and Quirky, And Growing Every Day “Hey, Jane. There’s suddenly no water at the Rec Center and I have 45 kids in here. We need to contact somebody NOW!” “Dear Loopsters, Does anybody know when they'll be back to pave the street?" “Jane. Please distribute this message about the upcoming meeting at your earliest convenience.” “Big Red.. Can you tell the Loopsters about this festival?" Every day when I open my e-mail around lunchtime, these are the types of messages that greet me. There used to be two or three of them; now there are typically at least twenty. One day last week, there were thirty five. But to use an expression that I picked up in my vocal performing days, I'm not complaining and “It makes my heart sing.” These messages are the best evidence I have that for some, THE LOOP is providing a sense of connectedness for people in our area and is also , of course, distributing information on a timely basis that otherwise might not get “out.” The history of THE LOOP is a tale of a former educator who happens to live on a street of younger professionals who originally connected to me as their neighborhood association block captain through paper messages which then changed to e-mails. Then, our street began to invite neighboring streets to social functions and to confer with their residents and neighborhood organization representatives about questions that concerned us all. Then came the awareness that these questions and answers and non-answers were both spilling over into more streets and also that some organizations rarely worked together in cordial ways. There’s also the factor of my propensity to talk to all sorts of people in all types of settings-- to a fault. One thing led to another, and THE LOOP took off !!!There is considerable evidence to suggest that we are reaching hundreds of people daily, depending on the topics addressed by the message. But even as we grow quickly, I am determined that THE Loop will hold onto those qualities that I like to think have made it catch on and last : a personal touch; real contact with people you know or at least live near or could meet; a sense of pride, cooperation, and civility in what I consider to be one of the most wonderful areas in the United States; and a sense of safety in ‘membership’ because it has not and will not become a “free for all” either in membership or unrestrained conflict. So... I’ll end this article with the “OFFICIAL” pitch for THE Loop. As it says... We’d LOVE to have YOU . The address to join is choirjw@aol.com . And, it is true..I really do believe...We ARE “All in this together." So, as we always say at THE Loop, Read on! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's THE PITCH: Dear Friend, This is a note to invite you and associates or neighbors in South Baltimore...or anywhere in the city, for that matter, as our membership now stretches throughout the region... to become members of THE Loop. What began as an easy way to keep in touch and informed on E Wheeling Street in Federal Hill has now evolved into an interconnected network of residents, merchants, city and neighborhood officials and representatives, organizations, safety officers, restaurant and hospitality folk, congregation leaders, volunteers, and others, who stay in touch through e mail messages which all go through a hub. Every message is different and is labeled clearly so a member knows whether to bother to open it during a busy day. All addresses are kept at the hub and not sent out unless the message to be distributed indicates that the sender so desires. The price of membership is ZERO. You may disconnect from THE Loop as easily as you join. To join, send your desire to do so to me, Jane Wehrle, at choirjw@aol.com along with the e mail address you wish to use for Loop messages . Thanks for all you do. and thank you for reading about the ever growing Loop. Our motto: "We're all in this together." Several stops in easy walk of the festival, at Penn Station going and coming, at Charles and Biddle northbound, and Preston and St. Paul southbound. Jim And don't forget; Enjoy THE BACH CONCERT SERIES CHOIR at 4PM, Sunday, July 18th at ARTSCAPE at beautiful Corpus Christi Church in historic Bolton Hill. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) On checking out terrific coverage in THE WASHINGTON POST: Loopster STAN C fills us in: Hi Jane, The theme of the Arts & Style section of yesterday's Sunday Washington POST was the arts scene in Baltimore, featuring essays on Art, Theater, Pop Music and Opera. The cover story was entitled "National Bohemians" and was written by Ann Hornaday, the POST's movie critic who formerly held that same position with the SUN. Presumably the timing was because of ARTSCAPE this upcoming weekend. Stan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) For those concerned about protecting our environment... I've received some thought provoking information from Loopster BRAD HEAVNER, State Director of Environment Maryland. Hi Jane, ...We could supply one-third of our region's power needs with wind turbines off the East Coast, and several companies have expressed interest in building wind farms off the coast of Maryland and other states. ..... He urges interested persons to check out some strategies for making actions such as these possible. See The Environment Maryland website if you wish to read more. There's a lot of great information and ways to get involved there. http://www.environmentmaryland.org (You may need to paste this into your browser.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Loopster GEORGE O about the terrific MARYLAND STATE BOYCHOIR IN CONCERT-- THIS SUNDAY EVENING!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Maryland State Boychoir is currently on tour in New England and Bermuda, and will be returning on Sunday. They traditionally have a '' Welcome Home Concert" which will be on Sunday , July 18 at 7:30. The location is the MSB CENTER for the ARTS (formerly St. Matthews Church) 3400 Norman Ave. in east Baltimore between Belair and Harford Roads and Herring Run and Clifton Parks.
