The Political Season

In the new normal, the days of 24/7 cable news networks
and commentators galore, one might argue that the political season is non-stop. There's truth in that, of course. But as actual election day gets closer, a larger and larger segment of the public becomes aware of the campaigns and those competing for our votes.
This reality is no different in the world of THE Loop, even though the organization itself tries to stay politically neutral and to include citizens of all persuasions and ideological stances. That said, I have had my fair share of knocks on the door recently and have found myself in conversation with the candidates themselves or their enthusiastic representatives. I am also accumulating my stack of brochures and leaflets and even have some hanging in the places of honor on the refrigerator.
And, NO, I'm not telling!

But, I am offering this non-original thought and hope
that you'll take it to heart.
The city and state we live in...indeed our country...is facing many, many challenges. This is NOT the time to sit idly by and to let someone else read up on the issues and the candidates. This is NOT the time to shrug your shoulders and say "Why bother?"
This, of all times, is NOT the time to decide that everything has gone to hell in a handbasket ...even if some things have appeared to do so... and to hide under your blankie.

May I propose that you do SOMETHING, even if it is just making yourself a more knowledgeable person who can cast a more informed vote.
Hey, if you learn more, you can even gripe more intelligently.
So, as I said, I am not proposing anything new.
It's political season; and, thankfully, in this country, we still have the rights that many , many others in this world have NEVER HAD.
So, even if you have "had it with politicians, the bad news, and the STUFF" ... whatever and whoever those and that might be... think about the unthinkable alternative and
JUST DO IT...
SOMETHING, that is.

THE Loop
Personal and Quirky,
And Growing Every Day

“Hey, Jane. There’s suddenly no water at
the Rec Center and I have 45 kids in here.
We need to contact somebody NOW!”

“Dear Loopsters, Does anybody know
when they'll be back to pave the street?"

“Jane. Please distribute this message
about the upcoming meeting at your
earliest convenience.”

“Big Red.. Can you tell the Loopsters about this
festival?"

Every day when I open my e-mail
around lunchtime, these are the types of
messages that greet me. There used to
be two or three of them; now there are
typically at least twenty. One day last week,
there were thirty five. But to use an expression
that I picked up in my vocal performing days,
I'm not complaining and “It makes my
heart sing.” These messages are the
best evidence I have that for some,
THE LOOP is providing a sense of
connectedness for people in our area and
is also , of course, distributing information
on a timely basis that otherwise might not get “out.”

The history of THE LOOP is a tale of a
former educator who happens to live on
a street of younger professionals who
originally connected to me as their
neighborhood association block captain
through paper messages which then
changed to e-mails. Then, our street began
to invite neighboring streets to social
functions and to confer with their residents
and neighborhood organization representatives
about questions that concerned us all. Then
came the awareness that these questions
and answers and non-answers were both
spilling over into more streets and also
that some organizations rarely worked
together in cordial ways. There’s also the
factor of my propensity to talk to all sorts of
people in all types of settings-- to a fault.
One thing led to another, and THE LOOP
took off !!!There is considerable evidence
to suggest that we are reaching hundreds
of people daily, depending on the topics
addressed by the message.

But even as we grow quickly, I am determined
that THE Loop will hold onto those qualities
that I like to think have made it catch on and
last : a personal touch; real contact with
people you know or at least live near or
could meet; a sense of pride, cooperation,
and civility in what I consider to be one of
the most wonderful areas in the United States;
and a sense of safety in ‘membership’ because
it has not and will not become a “free for all”
either in membership or unrestrained conflict.

So... I’ll end this article with the “OFFICIAL” pitch for
THE Loop. As it says...
We’d LOVE to have YOU .
The address to join is choirjw@aol.com .
And, it is true..I really do believe...We ARE “All in this together."
So, as we always say at THE Loop,
Read on!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's THE PITCH:
Dear Friend,
This is a note to invite you and associates
or neighbors in South Baltimore...or anywhere
in the city, for that matter, as our membership
now stretches throughout the region...
to become members of THE Loop.
What began as an easy way to keep in touch and informed on E Wheeling Street in Federal Hill
has now evolved into an interconnected network of residents, merchants, city and neighborhood
officials and representatives, organizations,
safety officers, restaurant and hospitality folk, congregation leaders, volunteers, and others,
who stay in touch through e mail messages
which all go through a hub. Every message is
different and is labeled clearly so a member
knows whether to bother to open it during a
busy day.
All addresses are kept at the hub and not sent
out unless the message to be distributed
indicates that the sender so desires.
The price of membership is ZERO. You may
disconnect from THE Loop as easily as you join.
To join, send your desire to do so to me,
Jane Wehrle, at choirjw@aol.com along with
the e mail address you wish to use for Loop messages .
Thanks for all you do.
and thank you for reading about the ever
growing Loop.
Our motto: "We're all in this together."
Yours truly,

Jane Wehrle
20 Year Resident of Baltimore
Educator/Artist/Volunteer Activist/Writer

ON CRIME:
Hey Jane,

Just wanted to give you & our neighborhood a heads up that
there were an abundance of car break-ins (most on West Street & Race Street)
over the past weekend. The Baltimore City policeman that I spoke with about my
own break-in advised me that there is a suspect that was released from jail on
Friday that will frequently hit those specific streets.

Please remind the neighborhood to be extra cautious when parking & to keep all
electronics out of view.

Thanks,
Alice Drayfahl
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ON WALKING DOGS:
We were in the park at mid afternoon (just got a new rescue dog thanks to SALLY JENNINGS)
for the first time in many months. This may not be news to other dog walkers, but we were surprised by
two men in T shirts and civvie pants walking by. When they passed I saw the words "Park Ranger" on the
backs of their shirts. I called to them and they said they work the city parks.
One said there aren't many of them. He said they had worked the "west side parks" yesterday
and implied they were doing the other parks today. When I asked whether they enforced the leash law,
one showed me a ticket book he was carrying and said, "$250 fine." But the other seemed to imply they
warned owners of unleashed dogs first. They were pleasant to talk to, unlike some of the animal control
people I met in past years. So be warned.....
Jim

1 ) A vacation suggestion for YOU and Your PET.
In from Loopster Cheryl N.
By the way, we all offer our fondest thoughts to her, as she recently lost her long-time
pet companion, Rosie, one of our former featured winners of Pet of the Week.
She writes:
I want to share with all pet lovers in The Loop the website of this B&B ...
It is called THE HOMESTEAD at Rehoboth Beach ...I can't begin to explain the wonderful experience
... caring, accommodating innkeepers who welcome us (humans) and our pets.
Ten minutes from Rehoboth Beach; 15 from Lewes Beach on which pets are welcome after 6:00 p.m. ...
and what a lovely little town for dining and shopping! Any pet owner who prefers not to board their pet
will love this small B&B at the beach. The website is www.homesteadatrehoboth.com.
